This map shows the location of all the helipads and landing zones in the state. The helicopter icons represent two of LifeFlight’s three bases. Use the menu at top right to find towns located within 80, 60, 40 or 20 minutes of each helicopter.
LifeFlight of Maine uses three twin-engine Agusta 109E helicopters, and one King Air B200, all operated by SevenBar Aviation
. The helicopters (based in Bangor, Lewiston and Sanford) travel at an average speed of 165 mph, making the trip from Caribou to Bangor or Rangeley to Portland in less than an hour. The airplane (based in Bangor) cruises at about 300 mph and can transport patients to specialty care as far away as Durham, NC; Cleveland, OH; and Toronto, ONT in Canada. After a multi-year infrastructure project, nearly every hospital in Maine and several small communities have built dedicated helipads to increase the efficiency of emergency helicopter transports.
In an effort to improve access in the state’s rural areas, a group of dedicated volunteers have also been working to establish landing zones along Maine’s extensive recreational trail network.
